About our Potato Peel Collection – first created in 2011

(From Livinglife Article by Caroline Mauger, 2012)

Guernsey Pie inspired jewellery designer Athene Sholl to create a stunning range of hand-made earrings and necklaces. Athene adored the book and decided to have a go at making a potato peel pie; when she looked at the peelings, it struck her that they would look amazing recreated in silver.

A few months before the Literary festival, she went to the ‘We’ve Got it Covered’ exhibition at the Greenhouse, which displayed dust jackets of the novel sourced from around the world. Whilst chatting to some of the Arts Development team, the conversation turned to Athene’s jewellery and before she knew it, the members of the Festival Committee were interested in seeing some pieces!

Athene began to photograph potato peelings and sketch their shapes, then beat and manipulated the silver until it took on the texture and look of real peelings. She then developed her idea further to produce versions which were aesthetically pleasing, but more stylised. Athene uses potato pearls in many of her designs; these do not have the uniform shape of regular pearls and they really do resemble miniature potatoes. They can be any colour but Athene’s favourite is grey as it’s less obvious than brown = and it goes with everything’.

When Athene showed her work to the Literary Festival organisers they were delighted. But one of the members raised the issue of copyright, something the designer had not considered as her work is usually commissioned. After seeking legal advice she decided to bite the bullet and contact Annie Barrows directly. Annie was charmed by the idea and was happy to give Athene’s work her official approval. As a thank you, Athene gave Annie a beautiful pair of earrings when she visited Guernsey.

Of Athene’s designs, Annie says, ‘I think they are lovely – she has created a subtle and elegant interpretation of the book’s theme’s’. Athene could now go down the route of mass production but she wants to continue making her jewellery by hand. ‘Every single piece is individual’ she adds.

Puffin Parade 2023

Lichen inspired puffin for the Puffin Parade

We were so pleased to be invited back to paint a puffin for the 2023 Puffin Parade, after painting a goat for the Golden Guernsey Goat Trail in 2021. Our goat was called Bejulicully – learn more about her here.

The puffin parade was in aid of Autism Guernsey and the GSPCA. A whole flock of puffins were painted by various businesses and organisations from around the island. All the puffins have been displayed in different locations around Guernsey.

Autism Guernsey invite app users to make a donation, the parade has finished but you can still donate here.

Our sponsor – Island Health, have been great to work with, neatly tying in with my own values around art and colour for mental health. The turquoise is one of their brand colours, perfect for a puffin.

The intricate hand drawn patterns are inspired by lichens –  my reference photos were taken from the puffins’ winter home, Iceland, on a trip in the summer of 2022.

This year’s we reprised an old favourite of ours. This peice is title “Butterflies around a hole” .  Inspired by the migration of the monarh butterfly and our impact on the planet changing the time of their migrations.

Each butterfly was cut from recycled packaging and paper, the patterns from which create the marking on the  butterflies wings.

B17 Wing Keyrings

B17 Wing Keyrings

We love commissions that are out of the ordinary. These are our one of our most interesting and enduring commissions in recent years.

Cut by hand from a B17 bomber wing that hit a telephone pole on landing and was abandoned in a feild in Hertfordshire. The wing laid on farmland for 50 years, used as a bridge across a ditch, until it was restored and displayed in Nuthampstead airfield museum.

One of the trustees of the museum, whose father was in the 398 Bombadiers Group stationed in the UK during the war, approached us to make tokens from a leftover piece of the wing a few years ago.

We’re now on our fourth repeat order for these fabulous keyrings and pendants. A bit of history, and traditional techniques coming together… We love it.

Ultraviolet Colour Theory Necklace 2020

Ultraviolet Colour Theory Necklace 2020

Ultraviolet Colour Theory Necklace 2020

This necklace is inspired by the colour theory essay called purple which you can read here.

This piece was made from freshwater pearls and crystals, finished with a handmade sterling silver clasp.  The freshwater pearls reflected the light creating a rainbow of greens, blues and purples. The little crystal beads added a lovely deep purple twist to create beautiful spaces between the chunkier pearls.

This necklace has now been sold, however if you are interested in seeing any of the colour theory jewellery that we currently have available in our shop click here.
